Couple Kidnapped And Tortured By Cannibals During Holiday

A British couple claim that they were tortured and kidnapped by cannibals while on holiday in Papua New Guinea.

The Mirror report, Matthew Iovane and his girlfriend Michelle Clemens were captured by tribesmen and forced to strip under threat of death.

The 31-year-old, who starred on Channel 4’s Shipwrecked, told The Sun they were savagely beaten with machetes when they tried to flee the jungle.

Iovane and his American girlfriend were reportedly enjoying an adventure holiday when things took a dark turn on their last day.

The couple had been trekking through the jungle in Papua New Guinea – infamous for its alleged cannibalism – when they say they were confronted by two tribesmen.

Iovane told The Sun:

“They both had machetes with huge blades and one had a long wooden spear with a crude arrowhead and they were grunting.

I thought we were being robbed so we put down our bags and tried to calm them, saying they could take everything when they started pushing and threatening us.”

The pair claim they were stripped naked, bound with vines and blindfolded before being subjected to a horrifying ‘torture game’.

Clemens, 31, is believed to have cut her fingers to the bone when she fought with the ‘feral’ tribesmen who Iovane says barely spoke English but were able to threaten: “We will kill you.”

The couple say they eventually managed to escape as they were being walked along a ridge by their captors.

They fled half naked leaving all their belongings behind, including an iPhone which shockingly the tribesmen apparently recognised and tried to use.

Iovane, explained to The Sun:

“They took our belongings, I was naked in the most remote jungle on Earth with no shoes and Michelle was bleeding buckets beside me in her underwear.

But nothing mattered except getting away, so we ran.”

Thankfully the traumatised couple were eventually spotted by a man who raised the alarm.

A Foreign Office spokesman told The Telegraph:

We are providing support to a British national and their partner who both suffered injuries and were taken to hospital following an incident in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on 11 January.

Both Iovane and  Clemens are now safe.
