After recently announcing he was going to invest $100 million in the search for aliens, Stephen Hawking has now claimed that if we were to find extraterrestrial life it might not end well for us.

Right, how about you invest that money in something else then?

The world-renowned scientist has warned that advanced aliens may ‘conquer and colonise’ our planet, The Mirror reports.

He said in a recent interview in El País:

If aliens visit us, the outcome could be much like when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans

Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach

Professor Hawking also said that the existence of aliens is beyond doubt. He went on to say our best chance of survival in the long run is to find a new home on another planet:

There’s an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy Earth

I therefore want to raise public awareness about the importance of space flight. I have learnt not to look too far ahead, but to concentrate on the present

His investment into the search for alien life funds a project called Breakthrough Listen, in which a team scans the entire Milky Way and 100 nearby galaxies for alien broadcast signals.

Let’s hope he doesn’t find any.
