A cemetery in Arizona is having a trick-or-treating event for kids that is scheduled to take place during the Halloween season in Mesa. Families that have loved ones buried at the cemetery and area residents are furious after they learned about the controversial event.
Members of the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce and The Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery are planning on having a “Trunk-or-Treat” on cemetery grounds on October 23 from 4 to 7 pm. The event is advertised on the cemetery’s marquee sign. People that have driven by and seen the sign are starting to flood the funeral home’s Facebook page with disapproval.
“This is a place of rest for those gone on before us, not a place to have an event such as this. Halloween should not be celebrated at the cemetery. It is not the place. Please find it in your heart to have this event somewhere away from here. It is just very inappropriate and disrespectful to the dearly departed and their families,” Lynn Dennis said.
“Trunk-or-Treat” events are safer than regular door-to-door trick-or-treating. Members in the community volunteer to decorate their vehicles so children can come to each one to visit and get candy, games, and prizes.
“I thought this was the place for me to place my daughters ashes to rest. A cemetery is not a fairground for circus and fun times. Somewhere along the way we need to teach our children about respect and honor of the cemetery, not to dress in costumes and run around. There are so many other great events you could plan and have, but Halloween is such a controversial holiday, so why would you want that. It is sick and very disrespectful,” Sherry Annè Coombe said.
