Police identified a woman who claimed she was a mermaid, but they are not releasing her name because she may have been a victim of a crime.

An almost completely naked, dripping-wet woman was walking down the middle of the road near a casino at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday when a passerby found her and asked if she needed help.

She didn’t seem to know who she was and told the good Samaritan she was a mermaid.

“She was wet, she said she had been in the lake, said she needed help and needed to be taken to the hospital,” said Lt. Mark Hudson of the Fresno police.

The driver took her to the hospital, where the police questioned her.

She said her name was Joanna, but didn’t know how she wound up in Fresno, walking naked down a busy street at 3 in the morning.

“We did go through the records after fingerprinting her, and we still did not come up with her identity,” Hudson said.

The woman is 5-foot-4 inches tall, weighs about 150 pounds and police think she’s between 17 and 24 years old.

Also, she has webbed toes on both feet.

“There are some strange things that happen up here. We’re in the mountains,” resident Karen Renwick explained. She added that the woman is lucky she didn’t get run over because the cars just fly on that road, and there was a big wreck there just the other day.
