Horror movies are meant to scare the hell out of a viewer for entertainment purposes. They always consist of fear-inducing elements such as ghosts, werewolves, vampires, serial killers, and some other supernatural themes. Horror movies have been around for a long time and a lot of people enjoy it while others cannot stand it. A lot of horror movies made it to the cinemas in 2019 and were enjoyed by so many people. The top 10 horror movies of 2019 in no particular order are listed and overviewed below:
Midsommar
Midsommar has a nice plot built around it. It was written and directed by Ari Aster and co-produced between the United States and Sweden. Critics gave positive reviews about the movie after it was released in theatres in the United States on the 3rd of July 2019 and the 10th of July in Sweden. The plot is built around a group that travels to Sweden at the invitation of some of their friends to witness a midsummer festival that happens once every ninety years. This celebration that is part of the rituals of a pagan cult involves some human sacrifices which at first are unknown to the group. Things begin to take a deathly turn when the cult begins to kill the group members. It is easily one of the scariest movies of 2019.
IT: Chapter two
This a sequel of the original movie IT, based on the novel written by Stephen King in 1986. A lot of people have the opinion that this sequel is not as good as the original movie but it had a lot of positive reviews when it was released theatrically in the United States on the 6th of September 2019. The movie plot portrays a murderous clown, Pennywise. Childhood friends that made a promise so many years ago to kill Pennywise if it ever appeared again come together in hopes to keep their promise but things are not going to be easy for them.
Ready or Not
Ready or Not was released on the 21st of August 2019 in theatres after its premiere on the 27th of July in the same year. The movie got a lot of positive reviews from critics. It has an unusual plot for a horror film as it employed humor and thrill. A young woman marries into a rich, upper-class family. She always hoped to end up with the man she wanted but it came with a price. She would be hunted for the sport to earn her place in the family if she lives. She would have to run from the hunting family for a night to be part of them for the rest of her life. Interesting.
Us
Released theatrically on the 22nd of March 2019 by Universal Pictures, Us received a lot of reviews both positive and negative ones but the horror movie left its mark. The movie was written and directed by Jordan Peele. Us has an interesting storyline that starts with a young girl that sees her doppelganger and is haunted by the image in her later years as an adult. She goes on a trip with her family to their lake house and there with another family encounter all their doppelgangers that are trying to kill them. They go through the ordeal but things are not really what they seem. The contact lenses worn in the movie by the doppelganger create a scary effect that is unprecedented.
Pet Sematary
This movie is also based on the novel written by Stephen King of the same name in 1983. On the 5th of April 2019, the movie was released in theatres after its premiere. Even though it is considered better than the 1989 adaptation of the same movie, it garnered a lot of positive reviews and negative reviews. The plot is catchy as it tells a story of a family that relocates to New England and discovers a graveyard and other terrifying secrets at their backyard. The family battles with undead and more to stay alive.
The Curse of La Llorona
It is a movie drawn from Mexican folklore. It was released theatrically in the United States on the 19th of April 2019 after a premiere almost a month earlier. It received a lot of negative and positive reviews from critics and the general public. It is set in Los Angeles in the year 1973. La Llorona is the spirit of a woman clad in a white dress that steals and drowns children, the movie is a supernatural horror film and a woman has to battle the three-hundred-year-old spirit for her children. The spirit is destroyed but not without a fight.
Annabelle Comes Home
Raking in a gross of two hundred and twenty-nine million dollars, Annabelle Comes Home was released theatrically on June 26th, 2019 and had mixed reviews from critics. The warrens, a couple that is demonologists get a hold of a doll, Annabelle that summons spirits to do its bidding. They leave to investigate other cases but hell is let loose when out of curiosity, Annabelle is set free.
Crawl
Crawl was released by Paramount pictures theatrically in 2019 on the 12th of July. The movie had a lot of positive reviews. Crawl is a story with disaster as its main theme where a girl that is worried about her father’s safety defies warnings to go and find her father in his house but she encounters alligators that are bent on tearing her apart. She has to fight for her life.
Brightburn
A family takes in a child that is not of this planet. The child is gifted but he does not use his powers for good rather for evil. The movie has a lot of positive reviews.
The Perfection
The plot of The Perfection is built around a young cellist that had to abandon her education in music school to take care of her deathly sick mother but returns to find out that her place has been taken by another talented cellist. A lot of betrayal and scheming goes on in the movie to reveal who the real victims are. The Perfection received a lot of positive reviews.
